Spinach Berry Smoothie

This spinach berry smoothie is a great way to add some greens to your diet by sneaking them into a delicious breakfast treat!

I feel very passionate that if I'm going to drink a smoothie, I need to sneak something healthy into it, mostly because I know I won't get in in my system any other way. Over the last few years I've loved just adding a handful of spinach to my smoothies as a daily habit. You hardly notice that it's in there, and you get the health benefits of spinach, minus the experience of chewing down a bunch of leaves.

Spinach Berry Smoothie:

To make this spinach berry smoothie you're going to need one banana, a handful of spinach, 2 tbsp plain greek yogurt, 1 cup of berries of your choice, and about 1/2 cup of liquid of your choice. I used almond milk but you could easily use any nut, milk, oat, or soy based milk of your preference.

Benefits of Raw Spinach:

Spinach is filled with lots of amazing vitamins and minerals that our bodies need! Spinach is an excellent source of vitamins K, A, C, B2, and Folate. Spinach is also rich in manganese, magnesium, and iron. Vitamin K is especially known for maintaining bone health, and spinach happens to be a huge source of Vitamin K when compared to other vegetables. If you want strong bones, eat your spinach.

One thing to note is that vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat soluble vitamins, so you need to consume them with a fat source in order for them to have the most effect in your diet. This is why I've chosen to use almond milk and greek yogurt in this recipe to get the most out of those nutrients offered by the produce.

Spinach Berry Smoothie Variations:

  • Add a scoop of protein powder to make this a more complete meal
  • Add a scoop of nut butter for some more beneficial fat, protein, and flavor!
  • Change up the berries you use! I used blueberry, raspberry, and strawberry, but you could use whatever you like or have on hand!
