Healthy Shamrock Shake

Healthy Shamrock Shake

This healthy shamrock shake recipe is a delicious mint chocolate chip combination packed with tons of healthy vitamins and nutrients!

I'm a huge fan of all things mint chocolate chip, as seen in my original Shamrock Shake post. However, sometimes you want the amazing flavor of a shamrock shake, but the nutritional benefits of something like a smoothie. This Healthy Shamrock Shake recipe is the best of both worlds. It's deliciously creamy, vibrantly green, and has a great minty flavor from real mint leaves. It's the perfect way to start your day in my humble opinion.

Healthy Shamrock Shake:

This shamrock shake comes together with a bunch of really simple ingredients. All you need is spinach, frozen banana, mint leaves, almond milk, greek yogurt, and a handful of chocolate chips. Blend everything together in a high powered blender until smooth and you have the best mint chocolate breakfast anyone could ever want.

I love that this recipe provides healthy nutrients from the banana and spinach (and gives you a serving of both fruits and vegetables!), along with protein from the greek yogurt, healthy fats from the almond milk, and a punch of great flavor from the mint and chocolate. It's a stellar combination of health and flavor.

The Best High Speed Blender:

Our family has been using the KitchenAid K400 blender for over a year now and we love it so much. It blends everything for smoothies really easily, rarely gets stuck on frozen items and needs to be stopped and have more liquid added, and has been overall a great addition to our kitchen. It has amazing horsepower for about half the cost of other blenders.

Mint Leaves Benefits:

Mint leaves are a great source of nutrients and vitamins including vitamin A and antioxidants. It may relive IBS symptoms and aid in digestion. Some studies have found mint to aid in brain function and reduce feelings of frustration and anxiety, and if nothing else, it will make your breath smell better.

The Best Blender for Smoothies:

We have been using the Kitchenaid K400 blender exclusively for the last year and absolutely love it! It has a ton of power making it super easy to blend through frozen fruit! I almost never have to mush things down and shake the blender to get things to puree, which isn't something I can say for every blender we've had previously.

Amazon Metal Straws:

If you've noticed, we use the same metal straws in almost all of our smoothie pictures. Our family has been using these metal straws for the last two years now and we really love them. It saves so much plastic from going into the landfills, and I honestly love that we don't have to purchase straws at the grocery store anymore. We bought these on Amazon, and you can't go wrong for under $10!

Strawberry Banana Spinach Smoothie Recipe Notes:

  • We always use plain non-fat greek yogurt in all of our smoothie recipes!
  • Almond milk is a great source of vitamin D and healthy fats which is why we use it often, but you can sub for any milk or liquid of your choice!
  • You can boost the protein by adding a scoop of protein powder
  • A scoop of nut butter would also be a great addition too!

Sometime within the last year we went from almost never drinking smoothies to really making them a part of our everyday routine. It's super bright and fruity, you can't taste the kale at all, and it's packed with healthy protein, fats, and carbs!

What Are the Benefits of Kale?

Kale is actually one of the most nutrient dense foods in the world. It's packed with vitamins A, K, E, B6, manganese, calcium, copper, potassium, and magnesium. Kale is also packed with Quercetin and Kaempferol which are both powerful antioxidants that have been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-depressant, and anti-cancer benefits. Basically, if you want to be super healthy and have a body ready to fight off anything, adding kale to your diet could only help the cause.

Spinach Berry Smoothie

Spinach Berry Smoothie

This spinach berry smoothie is a great way to add some greens to your diet by sneaking them into a delicious breakfast treat!

I feel very passionate that if I'm going to drink a smoothie, I need to sneak something healthy into it, mostly because I know I won't get in in my system any other way. Over the last few years I've loved just adding a handful of spinach to my smoothies as a daily habit. You hardly notice that it's in there, and you get the health benefits of spinach, minus the experience of chewing down a bunch of leaves.

Spinach Berry Smoothie:

To make this spinach berry smoothie you're going to need one banana, a handful of spinach, 2 tbsp plain greek yogurt, 1 cup of berries of your choice, and about 1/2 cup of liquid of your choice. I used almond milk but you could easily use any nut, milk, oat, or soy based milk of your preference.

Benefits of Raw Spinach:

Spinach is filled with lots of amazing vitamins and minerals that our bodies need! Spinach is an excellent source of vitamins K, A, C, B2, and Folate. Spinach is also rich in manganese, magnesium, and iron. Vitamin K is especially known for maintaining bone health, and spinach happens to be a huge source of Vitamin K when compared to other vegetables. If you want strong bones, eat your spinach.

One thing to note is that vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat soluble vitamins, so you need to consume them with a fat source in order for them to have the most effect in your diet. This is why I've chosen to use almond milk and greek yogurt in this recipe to get the most out of those nutrients offered by the produce.

Spinach Berry Smoothie Variations:

  • Add a scoop of protein powder to make this a more complete meal
  • Add a scoop of nut butter for some more beneficial fat, protein, and flavor!
  • Change up the berries you use! I used blueberry, raspberry, and strawberry, but you could use whatever you like or have on hand!

Banana and Blueberry Smoothie

Banana and Blueberry Smoothie

This banana and blueberry smoothie is the perfect base smoothie recipe for a breakfast with endless possibilities and flavor combinations.

I feel like I'm going to be thrown in food jail for saying this, but I don't really love eating bananas. As a runner I feel like I'm supposed to want to eat one after every run I do, and that they're supposed to be a huge part of my diet, but I just can't. Throw one in a delicious smoothie though? Yes and yes. In fact, I often feel like a smoothie isn't a smoothie without a banana. Does anyone else agree on my logic here? This Banana and Blueberry Smoothie is a great quick and easy breakfast before school, a workout, or anytime you need a fruit filled fix.

Banana and Blueberry Smoothie:

This banana and blueberry smoothie is a great way to get a blast of good and healthy fat, carbs, and protein early in the morning to start your day. This recipe comes together with one banana, one cup of blueberries, 1/4 cup of plain non-fat greek yogurt, and about 1/4 cup of any milk of your choice. I used whole in my smoothie but you could certainly use any nut, oat, or soy milk in it's place as well!

Good Blender for Smoothies:

Right around Christmas in 2019 we got a Kitchenaid K400 blender. We had a few really bad blenders previously that were super cheap, but couldn't blend a smoothie for the life of them. This Kitchenaid blender has a 1.5 HP motor, and we haven't had any issues with it not blending frozen fruit or having to smoosh things around to get it going again. I love that I can toss in all my smoothie ingredients at once, turn it on, and within a few seconds everything is blended super smoothly and ready to drink!

If you're looking for some ideas for some different variations of this smoothie recipe, you could:
  • Add a scoop of vanilla protein powder
  • Add a handful of spinach to up the greens
